General

Hallstatt is situated in the socallled „Salzkammergut“ and belongs with it`s 920 inhabitans to the UNESCO world cultural heritage. After discovering an ancient cementery near Hallstatt this epoche of the ice age is called “Hallstattzeit”. This fact helped to make the village of Hallstatt well known all over the world.

History

Hallstatt was not accessible by car till the end of the 19th century. The only way to get to Hallstatt was by boat. 1890 the first small and narrow road was blasted in the rocks.

The area around Hallstatt is inhospitable and bad accessible but because of its sources of salt the area is inhabit since the early time of the “Neolithikum”. The oldest archeological exavations are about 6000 years old. 1846 Johann Georg Ramsauer discovered an old cemetery and one of the oldest known forge of the world. Because of the high developed culture of this area at that time, Ramsauer called the time related to the records “Hallstattzeit” (800 to 400 bC) Because of that Hallstatt is very famous and each year thousands of tourists come to the village to visit the historical site right beside the lake.

Sights

Above Hallstatt on a rock the gothic church “Maria Himmelfahrt which was built in 1505 is situated. One of the towers is the relict of an even older church which was built at the same place. This tower was built about 200 years before the existing church.

The Museum of Hallstatt owns beside the natural historical museum of Vienna the biggest collection of artefacts of the “Hallstatt period”.

Furthermore there are many more sights like the salt mountain funicular, the Hallstatt salt world, archaeological excavation, and many more.
