Montenegro is located in the heart of Europe, where the mountains of the Balkan and the calming Adriatic sea unite for natural beauty. It is a small country (total size of 13.812 km2) with very hospitable people.
Montenegro lies in the south eastern part of Europe (Time: GMT +1) and has 648.000 inhabitants. Montenegro is bounded in the west by the Adriatic sea, direct neighbouring countries are Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia and Serbia. The administrative and economic capital is Podgorica, with 173.000 inhabitants also the largest city in Montenegro. The historic an cultural centre is in Cetinje.

Arrival

By car: The two most important directions in Montenegro are the Jadranska magistrala (highway) from Herczeg Novi to Ulcinj and the road from Petrovac-Podgorica-Kolasin-Bijelo Polje, which connects the north and the south of the republic. If you choose to travel by car, you can either go via Serbia (Belgrad) or travel along the Croatian coast and stop in one of the beautiful cities like Zagreb, Split or Dubrovnik.


By air: There are two airports in Montenegro: the airport Golubovci in Podgorica (65 km from Bar) and the airport Tivat (58 km from Bar). By sea: Passenger vessels frequently ply between Bar-Bari and Bar-Ancona.

Language

The official language is Serbian. A s a tourist you get along very well with English or German. The people are very helpful and it is no problem to move around in the country.

Eating & Drinking

The national cuisine of Montenegro is separated into Mediterranean and continental cuisine. Generally the Montenegrin cuisine is considered to be healthy.
Typical dishes of the Mediterranean cuisine are cheese, fish and sea food, prepared with spices and herbs of the region.
As a starter different sheep and goat cheese, olives, sardines and sea food salads are served. Traditional main dishes are boiled or grilled fish as well as risotto an sea food.
The traditional cuisine in the continental area of Montenegro is a little bit different than the one from the coastal region. Especially milk and meat products as well as continental fruit and vegetables are offered. Typical dishes are for example ham and cheese as starters and roast lamb and beef with different vegetables as main courses.
